tom verlaine (12" bad girl 1989)
the first single, a john peel favourite and nme single of the week. the family cat became the most exciting new band ever, for at least a fortnight.
tell em were surfin a1. albert hoffmann's bike
a2. final mistake
a3. sandbag your heart
a4. slept in clothes
b5. from the city to the sea
b6. taken by surprise
b7. endless cigarette
b8. gabriel's wings
(extra tracks on cd - tom verlaine, octopus jnr.)
tell 'em we're surfin' (mini lp/cd bad girl 1989)
their debut mini album consisting of 8 perfect lo-fi thrashy pop tunes. although it does sound like the producer and engineer had both popped out for a fag while it was being recorded.
remember what it is that you love a1. remember what it is that you love
b2. push comes to shove
b3. (thought i'd died) and gone to heaven
remember what it is that you love (12"/limited 7" bad girl 1990)
maybe their finest single. three thunderingly good tunes ideal for waving around like a muppet to.
place with a name a1. place with a name
b2. concrete
b3. pass away
b4. theme from "the family cat"
place with a name (12" bad girl 1990)
again, the production is terrible, which somehow works.
tom verlaine demo 1. tom verlaine (demo)
tom verlaine (demo) (7" flexi bad girl 1989)
flexi disk given away on the place with a name tour. "the first ever studio recording by the family cat, shoreditch , summer 1988. limited edition of 1050, each sleeve different, each disc the same", to quote the accompanying bit of photocopied paper. the sleeve is undeniably different, each a unique composition of spray can and stencil. and the track is rather good, proving perhaps the unfortunate fact that the better produced their records became, the blander they sounded.
strange kind of love a1. family cat - strange kind of love
aa2. cud - remember what it is that you love
cud / family cat - clawfist singles club (limited 7" clawfist 1990)
a split single, the cat play the cud, the cud play the cat. the cat track is good but has difficulty living up to cud's fantastic slap bass funk version of remember what it is that you love.
colour me grey a1. colour me grey
b2. i must have been blind
b3. great ugly place
colour me grey (12" bad girl 1991)
featured the then breaking pj harvey on backing vocals. she had just released dress and was john peel's latest favourite. the b-side features a fantastic cover of tim buckley's i must have been blind.
jesus christ a1. jesus christ
b1. chill out ye merry gentlemen/jesus karaoke christ/christ jesus
jesus christ (7" clawfist 1991)
a ... er ... christmas single. covering the big star song.
steamroller a1. steamroller (radio edit)
a2. what we talk about when we talk about love
a3. across the universe
b4. steamroller
steamroller (12"/7"/cd dedicated 1992)
"all other bands are dogshite". first single for dedicated got loads of radio airplay. a hit, almost.
furthest from the sun a1. too many late nights
a2. colour me grey
a3. prog one
a4. furthest from the sun
a5. steamroller
b6. keep it to yourself
b7. with a war
b8. river of diamonds
b9. gameshow
b10. fire music
(free 7" - 1a. kolumbus 2b.montague terrace)
furthest from the sun (lp with free 7"/cd dedicated 1992)
the first full length album and the first time they got the production just right. not a duff track in sight here.
river of diamonds a1. river of diamonds (re-navigated)
b2. sandbag your heart (re-bagged)
b3. tom verlaine (re-bereted)
river of diamonds (12"/cd/7" with free temporary tattoos dedicated 1992)
worth it for the b-sides, two big rawk productions of early songs, with tom verlaine building to an effect pedal orgy. on the a-side pj harvey's backing vocals from the album version were conspicuous by their absence, which was a shame.
rockbreaking 1. rockbreaking (demo)
rockbreaking (7" flexi bad girl 1992)
a free flexi sent to the mailing list as a taster for the new album. "recorded at 3:30am on a tape recorder with a dodgy pause button", according to the accompanying mailer.
airplane gardens a1. airplane gardens
b2. atmospheric road
b3. amazing hangover
airplane gardens (cd/12"/limited 7"/purple vinyl 7" dedicated 1993)
the first single off the forthcoming magic happens. something to do with withnail & i apparently.
springing the atom a1. springing the atom
b2. prog 4
b3. happy to be here
springing the atom (12"/cd/limited picture 7" dedicated 1993)
it seemed every release on dedicated had to feature a tacky sales gimmick of some kind, in this case you had the option of their fcuk target design as a picture 7". prog 4 had been their set closer since colour me grey, it finally got a release with this b-side.
magic happens a1. wonderful excuse
a2. amazing hangover
a3. move over i'll drive
a4. your secrets will stay mine
a5. airplane gardens
a6. gone, so long
b7. hamlet for now
b8. goldenbook
b9. rockbreaking
b10. springing the atom
b11. blood orange
b12. nowhere to go but down
magic happens (lp/cd with free book dedicated 1994)
the second and final album. the production was a lot more polished which made their sound a little too close to mainstream rock. while the songs are still great, it didn't have the edge of their previous album.
wonderful excuse a1. wonderful excuse
b2. unwieldy world
b3. sign of the bloodcell
b4. propeller blades

a1. wonderful excuse
a2. counting crosses (acoustic)
b3. gameshow (giftshop acoustic)
b4. wonderful excuse (acoustic)
wonderful excuse (cd/limited 12"/limited clear vinyl 7"/cassingle dedicated 1994)
another single. perhaps their most forgettable collection of songs. the limited edition 12" alternative version was much better, with three wonderful excuses for acoustic tracks.
golden book a1. goldenbook
b2. bring me the head of michael portillo
b3. blood orange (acoustic)
b4. gone to heaven

a1. springing the atom (acoustic)
b2. river of diamonds (acoustic)

a1. goldenboot
b2. old faithful
golden book (cd/cassingle/2x purple 7" dedicated 1995)
the final single, although it wasn't announced as such. another lacklustre effort, the rehashing of earlier songs becoming increasingly pointless. going out with a whimper.
